When we began developing Soothing Spray, we wanted to reconsider what a magnesium spray could be.
We had tried traditional magnesium sprays ourselves, but our children refused to use them. The stinging and itching associated with their application had made them difficult to incorporate into our family routines.
We wanted to explore a different approach. Something that retained the convenience of a spray, but placed greater emphasis on the experience of using it.
There was also a more personal consideration.
At the time, one of our children was in the midst of the toddler years. Bedtime was rarely a quiet affair, and persuading a small child to sit still long enough for an elaborate evening routine wasn't always realistic.
We needed something uncomplicated. A product we could reach for quickly, without adding another demand to an already busy evening.
At the same time, Sarah's son was playing a great deal of sport, and we began thinking about how Soothing Spray might fit into the routines that followed. We wanted something convenient to reach for after sport, just as easily as during a busy bedtime.
It reinforced our ambition to create a versatile product that could find its place throughout family life.
Rethinking the Formulation
Our experiences with traditional magnesium sprays encouraged us to explore a different approach.
We wanted to create something that prioritised the experience of application, with a formulation that felt considered in every respect.
Working closely with our formulator, we chose magnesium glycinate and incorporated our proprietary POM Calm Blend™ and Immunight®.
Our intention was to develop a magnesium spray that felt pleasant to use, with a fragrance and application experience that would appeal to the whole family.
Rather than focusing on any single ingredient, we wanted the formulation to be considered as a whole.
Designed for Real Life
The decision to create a spray was as much about practicality as it was about formulation.
With a toddler who rarely stayed still, we understood the value of products that could be applied quickly and easily. Particularly in the evening, when even the simplest tasks could become unexpectedly complicated.
We wanted a format that required very little preparation. Something convenient enough to keep close at hand and incorporate into the everyday.
But we were also thinking about the other members of our families.
The men in our households had expressed a preference for sprays over more traditional skincare formats. It was a small but important consideration, and one that reinforced our intention to create products that appealed to the entire family.
During the trial process, Soothing Spray also found its way to Sarah's dad, who quickly became a convert. It was a particularly satisfying moment for us, reinforcing our belief that a thoughtfully formulated product could appeal to different generations, each with their own preferences and routines.
We didn't want Soothing Spray to feel like a children's product adapted for adults, or an adult product repackaged for children.
We wanted something that felt equally relevant to both.
The spray format offered the simplicity and versatility we had been looking for.
The Art of Fragrance
As with Saviour Oil, fragrance was an important part of Soothing Spray's development.
We wanted to create something distinctive within the POM range while retaining the understated character that connects our products.
We were drawn to lavender and clementine.
Lavender brought a familiar floral character, while clementine introduced a gentle citrus note. There was something about the freshness of clementine that we found particularly soothing.
Together, they created a fragrance that felt light, balanced and quietly distinctive.
We wanted the scent to complement the simplicity of the spray rather than overwhelm it. Something pleasant enough to become part of a daily ritual, with a character that would appeal to adults as readily as children.
The resulting fragrance gave Soothing Spray an identity of its own while remaining consistent with our approach to the wider POM collection.
Beyond the Evening Routine
While busy bedtimes were an important consideration, we wanted Soothing Spray to have a place well beyond the evening routine.
From a quick application after sport to those moments when there's simply no time for a more involved skincare ritual, versatility was central to its development.
We thought about the different ways our own families might use it.
A child returning from an afternoon of sport. A parent looking for something uncomplicated at the end of a long day. The family members who preferred a spray to an oil or balm.
We wanted something that could move naturally between these different moments.
The format was deliberately simple. Easy to reach for, straightforward to apply and convenient enough to become part of an established routine.
For us, that practicality was an important part of the product's appeal.
We weren't interested in creating something that required families to find more time in their day. We wanted to develop a product that could fit into the time they already had.
A Place in the Everyday
Looking back, Soothing Spray represents another aspect of what we set out to achieve with POM.
Where Saviour Oil was developed around the experience of massage and the opportunity to create a more considered ritual, Soothing Spray emerged from a different need.
We wanted something that acknowledged the realities of family life: the busy evenings, the children who won't sit still, the different preferences within a household and the limited time parents often have for themselves.
At the same time, we didn't want convenience to come at the expense of a considered formulation or an enjoyable sensory experience.
Our intention was to bring those elements together in a product that felt effortless to use.
We hope Soothing Spray becomes one of those small things families instinctively reach for. Whether it's after an afternoon of sport, during the evening routine or simply a moment of care at the end of the day.
A little consideration, even when time is in short supply.
